Carved Floral Vase
Made of my woodfire porcelain body and fired on the top of the very front shelf of the Simon's Rock train kiln. This pot was front and center for all of the action of this 40 hr woodfiring, and received a generous coating of beautiful amber-yellow and green ash highlighting the carved floral designs.
Several decorative and surface techniques were used. First a layer of slip to cover the entire pot, save the rim and foot. Then a band of a second slip around the middle. Lines carved to divide the space. Flower motifs carved and slip painted within the petals. Adornment around the collar, and handles are added. Then finally some dots of slip around the belly.
There's something about the symmetry of this pot that seems to evoke a feeling of Art Nouveau stained glasswork.
One of, if not the, "belle of the ball", of this firing.
